CONAKRY, Guinea – At least 32 people were killed and six others seriously injured early Sunday when the Dar-es-Salam dumpsite collapsed in Conakry, Guinea, following hours of heavy rain.
The disaster occurred around 3:00 AM on August 23, 2026, burying homes and residents in the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood.
Search-and-rescue teams, backed by bulldozers and heavy machinery, are combing through tons of debris for possible survivors. Emergency medical teams and humanitarian agencies are also providing care to the injured and assistance to residents displaced by the collapse.
The tragedy has reignited safety concerns. Opposition figures said the Dar-es-Salam dump site was scheduled for closure on the day of the disaster. The government had also recently issued eviction orders for communities living in the surrounding area.
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to identify the victims.
